Detail
Banyan Fig
"Banyan Fig" emphasizes the Japanese aesthetic,
which was so prevalent during the Arts & Crafts
period. Prior to this time, American artists' representation
of the landscape was a monumental, expansive view,
like that of Bierstadt. After exposure to the tremendous
influx of Japanese prints to America during the Arts
& Crafts period, American artists began to express
the Japanese sensibility in their work. A more personal
landscape manifested, with closely cropped and asymmetrical
compositions, very like that in this series of my
work, which I call "Intimate Views of Nature." "Banyan Fig" is an adaptation of an Alice Smith painting, ca. 1912.
