ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Original Paintings

Anita's originals are gouache (pronounced "go-wash") paintings on heavyweight 100% cotton paper. Gouache is an opaque form of watercolor paint that is made from natural pigments set in an emulsion of tree sap. It is a material of the utmost longevity, as gouache paintings from the early Egyptian dynasties have been recovered in original condition. The intensity of color, the texture, the depth and impact of these original paintings cannot be matched by any reproduction, either giclee or lithograph, and thus are very highly prized by collectors. Every original painting comes with a personalized Certificate of Authenticity, signed and dated by the artist. Occasionally these originals become available, to view current offerings please click here.

You may also want to consider commissioning a unique, one-of-a-kind painting for your home or business. To view some of Anita's commissioned work, please click here, and please email if you would like to discuss your project with Anita.

Open Edition Lithographs

We are pleased to offer a large selection of Open Edition canvas lithographs, either framed or unframed, which are produced directly from Anita's original paintings. These lithographs are produced in an unlimited number, thus making them very affordable. The printing process used in the production of these Open Edition canvas lithographs, offset lithography, is one of the most reliable and time-tested printing processes available in commercial printing.  In this process, the original painting is scanned, plates are made from that scan and the plates are used on a printing press to print each lithograph individually.

These Open Edition canvas lithographs offer an extraordinary value, as the highest quality materials are used in their production.  Each lithograph is printed on 100% acid-free canvas with archival quality colorfast inks. These inks contain a special protective chemical that blocks the sun's damaging UV rays.  An additional topcoat of matte finish sealant is applied to the surface of the canvas offering further protection. The result is an heirloom quality, durable work of art that can be cleaned with a soft dry cloth. Every Open Edition canvas lithograph comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed and dated. Limited Edition Giclees

We are pleased to offer a growing selection of limited edition giclees, either framed or unframed that are produced directly from Anita's paintings. These giclees are produced in a limited edition of 100, plus four artist's proofs.

The giclee process involves close collaboration between the artist and the printer, and is quite different from offset lithography, as no films or plates are used in the process.  The original painting is scanned into a computer and that image then is printed directly onto 100% acid-free canvas. At this point the artist and the printer work together to adjust the color balance to match the original as closely as possible.  Several test canvases are printed, and from this group the artist chooses the "Artist's Proofs" (usually two to four in number).  These are the pieces that are used by the printer to match every single giclee in the print run of 100 copies, and these are the pieces that later become the most collectable.

The printer used to produce these giclees offers a much higher resolution than any other process available today. A fine stream of UV protective archival ink is sprayed, more than four million droplets per second, onto specially treated canvas from six separate spray nozzles: Each nozzle produces a combination of 512 chromatic changes, with over three million color possibilities from the combined six nozzles. The result is a razor sharp image with extreme depth of color, bright highlights and highly defined contrasts.  Each canvas is then sealed to protect from UV rays.  The result is a collector quality work of art that you will be proud to pass on generation to generation.  Every limited edition canvas giclee comes with a special Certificate of Authenticity that is signed and dated by the artist. Framing

Historic accuracy is very important to us, so we offer only authentically styled true mortise and tenon frames that are crafted entirely by hand. The historically accurate design of these extraordinary frames, complete with recessed horizontals and corner pegging, offers the perfect compliment to your Arts & Crafts style interior.

We use only the highest quality quartersawn white oak in the production of our frames. Our lumber is produced from white oak that is first quartered, and then cuts are made perpendicular to the tree rings. This produces the dramatic ray flake patterns seen in the diagram below. Such patterns inherent in the oak became the distinguishing characteristic of Arts & Crafts period furniture
.

Each board used in our frames is hand selected for its ray flake content and quality. Upon receipt of the raw lumber from the mill, every board is evaluated, and at this point in our selection process it is common for us to incur a 30% loss. The wood is them milled and ripped to the appropriate width and height, which is a process that exposes more of the true character of the board in terms of defects and ray flake content. The boards are then reevaluated, and at this point it is common for us to incur an another 30% loss.

After this rigorous selection process is complete, the wood is ready to be surfaced on all four sides. The end of each board is first marked to outline the ray flake, and that board is then placed on a surfacing machine in the direction that will allow trimming to expose even more ray flake. This labor intensive and time consuming process of surfacing our boards assures 100% consistency and accuracy among the boards.

Once the boards are surfaced, the wood is ready to be cut to the desired size for the vertical and horizontal members. Once cut, the vertical pieces, which are 2' wide, are placed into a mortising machine, which carefully cuts a slot, or mortise, to accept the horizontal tenon. The tenon is cut into the horizontal members, which are 3" wide, and the pieces are fitted and clamped. A hole is drilled completely through the joints, and a dowel is then placed through this hole, locking the frame together. The structural integrity of the mortise and tenon joint is incomparable, and it is valued highly by collectors as the hallmark of fine furniture.

Once the frame is completely assembled, it is sanded by hand several times to prepare the wood for finishing. Our finishing process is as historic as our frame design and production process, following Gustav Stickley’s time-honored four step process of sanding, staining, sanding again and finally sealing with a hand-rubbed wax. This process imparts an antique patina that is unparalleled in the contemporary furniture marketplace.

The result of all of this labor-intensive handcrafting and careful production is an heirloom quality historically accurate piece of furniture that is stain resistant, mar resistant, water resistant and low maintenance. All that is required to maintain its beauty is simply dusting with a soft dry cloth. We also offer our frames only for sale should you want to frame your own treasured photos or artwork. Click here for more information on purchasing frames.

The interior liner of the frame, a.k.a matting, is constructed of a solid wood base and is hand-wrapped in chocolate brown leather, olive green, natural linen or black leather. Each work of art is paired with the appropriate color liner, based upon the artist’s preference.

A ½” raised interior oak fillet, which is stained to match the frame, adds a distinctive finishing touch. The final effect of this beautifully crafted work of art is stunning, both visually and historically!
