River Scene
River
Scene - and its companion piece "Cypress
Trees at Sunset " - emphasizes the Japanese
aesthetic, which was so prevalent during the Arts
and Craft movement. Prior to this time, the American
artists' representation of the landscape was a monumental,
expansive view, like that of Bierstadt. After exposure
to the tremendous influx of Japanese prints to America
during the Arts and Crafts period, American artists
began to express the Japanese sensibility in their
work. A more personal landscape emerged, with closely
cropped asymmetrical compositions, very like that
of "River Scene" and Cyress Tree at Sunset".
Their easy simplicity and soft colors create a comforting
view of the American landscape.
